Olympian Allyson Felix says athletics ‘rubs off naturally’ on daughter Cammy

Allyson Felix has left an indelible mark on women’s sport as a five-time Olympian and 11-time medalist. And the witness that is his legacy could be taken up by the next generation in his own family.

Speaking with PEOPLE, Felix, 35, spoke highly of his 2.5-year-old daughter, Cammy, whom she shares with her husband Kenneth Ferguson.

“I think I’m just Cammy’s mom. At the end of the day, I’m someone who cleans the house and makes sure she has everything she needs,” joked the mother of one. child about her toddler, who was asleep in Los Angeles and couldn’t stay awake to watch most of her mother’s competitions in Tokyo.

“But she understands better now that I’m running. She loves to cheer and she loves to carry out starting commands. All of these things, she’s really into it. Little by little, she will understand,” said Felix.

“I’ll tell him everything someday,” added the star, telling his daughter about all of her historic races and strengthening his status as GOAT since the Athens Games in 2004.

Reflecting on her experience in Tokyo – her fifth and final Olympics but first as a mother – Felix said this year’s Games were “so special”, adding that she wanted to be “more vulnerable and just transparent” about her “being an older athlete” and a new mom. (At 35, Felix was the oldest track and field athlete to win a gold medal.)

“It just gave me a whole new perspective. I attribute that to that experience, to her and my daughter who really helped me find my voice,” said Felix.

Cammy first saw his mother in action during the Olympic trials in June. “It was the first time, at a competition, where there were other people. Because she had come to some during COVID, but no one was there. For her to be there, I think. that it’s like the biggest park in the world for her to run everywhere, ”remembers Félix proudly.

“She was on the track and she was with my friends’ kids doing all the things and having her best life. She really has fun, every time she comes because she has been on the track with me. in training and she’s been in the environment so much, I think naturally that rubs off a bit on her, “explained the athlete.

“So we’ll see what she decides to do. I would like her to take a different path or a different sport. But, of course, I will support her no matter what she decides,” Felix said of the matter. whether his daughter will. follow in his footsteps one day.

“I think we have those desires, just because we’ve been playing this sport for so long and we know how difficult it is. We want the best for our kids. Sometimes you hope they take a different path, but then it’s like sometimes, it seems inevitable, ”she noted.

As she moves from runway star to entrepreneur, Felix said she will always remember why she does the things she puts her heart and soul into.

“My why is definitely my daughter,” she stressed.
